Lisa's Writopia: Cantonelli’s Crest: Purple Haven – a Review

In a world where both humans and vampires live, is it possible for them to coexist in peace?

Grant Biltmore, a successful businessman, has no clue that vampires really exist. He is dying of cancer, but this is a secret that he has kept from all of his employees.

One day, he is attacked by two men and his entire life changes. When he goes to the doctor the next time, his test results amaze both him and the doctors.  But this is only the beginning of a life he never dreamed he would have.

His eyes are opened to a world full of what he would have once called monsters, but it is here that he finds love and a new destiny. Great danger is also waiting for him from foes who want nothing more to than destroy his happiness, his destiny, and the ones he loves.

Full of twists, turns, and surprises to keep you on the edge of your seat instead of blood, gore, and terrifying situations to give you nightmares, this book will keep you guessing as to what’s going to happen next. I’m betting there will be a sequel in the near future. If you are a fan of vampire fiction, this is a book you don’t want to miss.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Favorite Sentences:
He had never been a dreamer or, if he was, never remembered them, but the human monsters he saw in his sleep rattled him to the core.

His stomach felt as if it was ripping apart and saliva flowed freely from his mouth.

He died, became a vampire, faked a death, moved, and obtained a new business partner all within one week.

Her wedding just turned into a nightmare and now her fears were coming true as lovebug was in danger.

Lisa's Writopia-Essence of Time – a Review

Imagine your life and your marriage are perfect. You find out you are carrying the child that you and your husband have longed for. Then the military calls your one true love away. That leaves you alone to take care of the farm. How will you survive until he returns?

In eighteenth-century Kentucky, Peter and Linda fall in love and get married. Their idyllic life is interrupted when the military needs Peter’s assistance in France. Even though Linda is pregnant, Peter still feels that he must go. He is sure that he will return before the baby is born and that this excursion will provide for the future of them and their child. Before he leaves, he hires plenty of help to look after his pregnant wife and their farm.

Peter’s adventure in France turns out to be a bit more dangerous than it was supposed to be. Remember, this took place in the eighteenth century, so Peter couldn’t communicate with his boss or with his wife by telephone or email. Their communication was in the form of letters. I don’t even like to think what it would have been like to not have any clue why you hadn’t received a letter from your husband. And to not have any clue about what was happening to him would have driven me crazy.

Intrigue enters the story while Peter is in France. There were times I wondered if he would survive to make it back home to his wife. He does make it home again, but the unexpected news he receives when he gets there throws a huge twist into the story. Peter isn’t sure that he will ever recover, but life has a way of surprising us.

From that point forward, I wondered how things would work out. The ending was good, but there is more to happen. I hope a sequel is headed our way soon.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Favorite Sentences:
She could not manage a farm, workers, and an old woman all while being pregnant.

It was so cold the dogs wouldn’t even go outside long enough to chase away the cats.

Erlanger-Elsmere School Block Party!

Book Signing/Meet and Greet

August 6th at Four Finch Books in Bellevue, KY from Noon to 3.

Angel Musk created her first book in elementary school, using contact paper and her own illustrations.

Years later, when she found that first ‘publication’ tucked away in a box, she posted a photograph of it on her website which features the release of her second book, Cantonelli’s Crest.

Crafting stories is something that Newport native Musk, has been at for a long time.

“English was my favorite class in middle school with Ms. Otto,” says Musk. “I’m pretty sure I was the only kid in class to be excited when the teacher made us write lengthy reports.”

Musk, who now lives in Elsmere, will sign Cantonelli’s Crest at Four Finch Books at 355 Taylor Avenue in Bellevue on August 6 from noon to 3 p.m.

Angel Musk, author of Cantonelli’s Crest
A longtime fan of science fiction, fantasy, and ghost stories, Cantonelli’s Crest, gives a new spin to the popular vampire genre.

While Musk did not read the Twilight Saga series by Stephenie Meyer, she says the film adaptations of the books inspired her to create her own vampires and set them in a contemporary setting with a “splash of science.”

Cantonelli’s Crest follows successful businessman, Grant Biltmore, given a second chance life when his abruptly ends. He soon learns that immortality has a price, and Italy’s Vampire Council has certain expectations that they’re counting on him to fulfill. Along the way, he falls in love with none other than the Grand Vampire’s niece, and learns that their pairing was envisioned in ancient immortality prophecy as a means to unite vampires and humans in peaceful acceptance. But, as one might expect, the road to peace and love is fraught with peril.

“With so many medical advancements in the world, I tried to envision the existence of magical people being scientifically proven in a somewhat reliable way,” says Musk. “I wanted readers to stop and wonder if it could really happen.”

Author Angel Musk’s “Cantonelli’s Crest”
Immortality has its appeal too.

“I love the different powers an author can make vampires have in a story,” says Musk. “The immortality is a plus also. I could only imagine how it would feel to watch the world change and never die.”

Cantonelli’s Crest is Musk’s second published book, the grade school publication notwithstanding.

Because full-time work and raising three teenage boys leaves her with limited time to write, she decided to forego a strict deadline when she began writing Cantonelli’s Crest.

“I try not to make myself write,” says Musk. “If I am in the mood to write I will fire up the laptop or go old school and use paper and pencil.”

Realizing that there is no “easy button” when it comes to writing and publishing books, Musk published her first book, Essence of Time, in 2014. It is an historical romance set in Kentucky during the 1800s. Absent a mentor, Musk says she has since taught herself about the fundamentals of being an author.

Next up, she’ll be publishing a sequel to her first book, Essence of Time.

“My small fan base has been begging me for more of that one, and I promised them an Essence trilogy,” says Musk. “It’s entitled Essence of Love and the third book will be called Essence of Family.”

Musk will be writing a sequel to Cantonelli’s Crest, as well as a story she’s calling, The Ghost Box.

And if she weren’t writing fiction, what would she be doing? Like a good author, her answer leaves the reader wanting to turn the page to find out more.

“Definitely writing my mother’s life story,” says Musk. “You couldn’t make up some of the things she has been through, and I believe it would give hope to others.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Aren’t Vampires, those nasty and powerful creatures of the night, sucking the blood out of their victims, using their powers and immortality as superior beings to their advantage, trusting few, always ready for a good bloodbath? Get ready to see vamps in an entirely different light, perhaps the true version of who and what they are and how they really feel about humans, family and the creation of new vamps! Prepare to admit that just maybe author Angel Musk has it right. Cantonelli's Crest: Purple Haven is not a tale of sparkly vamps, but rather a look at vampires who love, are and will do anything to protect humans, as well as their own kind from evil. The Cantonellis break the vampire mold.

There was a prophecy told long ago, and its time has come to be fulfilled. One mortal turned vampire will become King and his offspring will be the most powerful creature on Earth, and there will be peace, or maybe great wars, but vampires will hide no more.

Grant was dying, and his gift to all was to remain at the helm of his company, making it as successful for all and maintain job security for those he employs, all while keeping his secret demise just that, secret. Little did her know he was under the scrutiny of the vampire world, that his integrity and business acumen would make him a target for vampiric immortality. His change was monitored and aided by a vampire who would become his true love, his eternal partner, together, they would be the fulfillment of the prophecy. Of course, first they must survive a brutal wedding day attack.

Angel Musk has written a gentle vampire book, one I could give to my mother to read, one that takes those baby steps for anyone not sure about the paranormal romance genre. Yep, this is fresh, filled with caring vampires, a patriarch/ruler who selflessly plans for the future of the world and some of the most HUMAN vamps I have ever met! Definitely light reading, definitely fresh, I mean, seriously, how many times have you put a vampire book down with a happy smile? I'm not saying this is the next forever classic, but I am saying you should give it try!

I received this copy from Angel Musk in exchange for my honest review.

Author Interview

A HUGE thanks to Angel Musk who took time out to answer a few questions

1.Who is Angel Musk when she is not writing?
I am a working mother during the week and an avid camper on the weekend. I love the traditional tent camping under the stars and taking in nature's glory.
2.You spared no emotion in ESSENCE OF TIME, are you a romantic
at heart?
I believe that love is a major necessity in life. Every person at some point in their life has felt love, shown love, received love, and has been in love. It can be expressed in many ways and touch the hearts of people close to you and now thanks to technology, far away.
3.Was it difficult to cover such a span of time, with
characters on both sides of the ocean?
I felt like the two sides of the story was needed in order for readers to understand Peter's personality and that though many miles away from his wife and home, family was the motivation to get out alive.
4.You captured the feel of the era, are you a history buff?
History was one of my favorite subjects in school. Without history there really is no future. I would love to go back in time and visit each decade just to capture the differences.
5.What is your next project in the works?
I am working on the sequel, Essence of Love and also a paranormal romance.
6.Tell us three things about you that readers wouldn't
I have 6 tattoos.  I once got my picture taken with actor Rob Schneider, and storms give me major anxiety.

Angel Musk & Ellie, Kumori, Tessa, Tucker, and Micah

Who is in the photo at right?

I am Angel Musk, a Mother of 3 boys, full-time worker, and part-time writer. I am a big dog lover! I share my home with Ellie, Kumori, Tessa, Tucker, and Micah. Micah is the son of Tessa and Tucker and is pug/Chihuahua mix. This is Tucker and me working. All of my dogs are under 7 years old.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

My book launch, Essence of Time. This is my first novel and I am really excited about it!

What's brewing?

Well, I can't stand the taste of coffee. So my favorite beverage is McDonald's Sweet Tea!

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

I ordered my dog children a 3 Month Bark Box Subscription. So far they are loving the treats and toys.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Ellie, was already named when we got her. She is named after the mammoth from the movie, Ice Age 2. Kumori, also had that name when we rescued her from the shelter. Her previous owner were friends of ours. Tessa, was received from a friend that no longer wanted her. Tucker, was from Tennessee and we had to throw in a little Kentucky pride for his name. Micah, was born from Tessa and when he came out he looked like he was wearing a mask like a raccoon. So we searched the internet for native American names for a raccoon.

How were you and your dogs united?

We were very fortunate to have these dogs enter our lives. Most were spur of the moment that turned into forever homes. We wouldn't have it any other way.

How do your dogs help--or hinder--your writing?

They like to snuggle up next to me. Tucker, the Chihuahua tries to climb under my laptop because it's so warm.

Have any actual dogs inspired fictional dogs in your published work?

There are dogs in my book but they were not my main focus.

Who are your dogs' best pet-pals?

Squeaky toy, ball, stick...?

Kumori will take sticks off trees to chew and play fetch with. She will also play with Frisbees and balls. She also likes to chase UPS trucks!

If your dogs could change one thing about Kentuckians, what would it be?
Not a thing, they love Kentuckians!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, which actors should do their voices?

Queen Latifah for Ellie, Robert Downey Jr. for Tucker, Sandra Bullock for Tessa, Nicole Kidman for Kumori, and Ashton Kutcher for Micah.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

Are you happy?

Essence of Time
by Angel Musk

Essence of TimeMy Review
Essence of Time by Angel Musk
My Rating: 4 Stars

In eighteenth century Kentucky on a small farm, a young couple prepare for the completion of their family. Their first child is only months from being born, but Peter must leave his family to journey to France on an assignment from “the Colonel.” Linda is left in the capable hands of an elderly and kind midwife, while the farm is to be run by two young orphan boys. While Linda waits for Peter’s safe return, Peter and his guide and newfound friend become the targets of death. The baby’s birth is imminent and there has been no word from Peter. In a time when birthing can be a life-threatening event, Linda faces her ordeal alone, except for the love of her patchwork family.
Finally home, Peter races to his beautiful wife only to find that his homecoming is bittersweet and his life is forever changed.

Angel Musk knows how to grab on to every ounce of emotion and pours it into her tale in spades. After building her world and setting the stage for her characters, her story becomes a gentle and warm tale of love, loss and finding a new kind of strength through a new kind of love in a small slice of history.
